Mental and emotional well-being in the menopause

While some women claim to “breeze” through the menopause, for many others it’s a much more difficult journey.

As well as having uncomfortable physical symptoms, you may also find that you are less resilient to criticism, start to lose confidence in work or social situations and get cross at your children or partner for things that you would normally laugh off.

Feeling irritable, anxious or downright miserable for no obvious reason is not unusual but can make it harder for you to deal with daily life. And if you are having problems sleeping, which often happens during the menopause, then these symptoms will undoubtedly be exacerbated.

You may think that you are feeling low because you are finding it hard to come to terms with losing your youth. But there’s more to it – the hormonal changes in your body that bring about the physical symptoms can also affect your mental and emotional well-being.

The menopause affects different people in different ways and there should be no barriers to asking for medical support.
