VARICOSE VEINS

Varicose veins are a common condition which affect up to 3 in 10 adults, with women being more likely to develop them than men. They appear as blueish, swollen, enlarged or twisted veins just beneath the surface of the skin. Although any vein in the body can become varicose, they most commonly develop in the legs and feet, particularly in the calves.

There are several types of varicose vein conditions including:

  • Trunk varicose veins – these are near to the surface of the skin and are thick and knobbly; they are usually visible, often quite long, and can look unpleasant
  • Reticular varicose veins – these are red and are sometimes grouped close together in a network
  • Telangiectasia varicose veins – also known as thread veins or spider veins, these are small clusters of blue or red veins that sometimes appear on your face or legs.

An Introduction to Varicose Veins

Leading Interventional Radiologist; Dr Mo Faris explains how quick and easy it is now to treat unsightly varicose veins with non-surgical techniques.

What Causes Varicose Veins

Varicose veins develop when the small valves inside the veins stop working properly, preventing blood from flowing smoothly to the heart. This will cause the valves to weaken or become damaged, causing the blood to flow backwards and pool in the vein, eventually causing it to become varicose.

Varicose veins generally continue to grow in size over time and can result in substantial pain and complications, if not treated. Symptoms can include: Leg pain or heaviness; rope-like bulging just beneath the skin; swelling, itching or burning: throbbing or cramping at night. The good news is Cooden Veins is at hand to offer a range of pioneering, non-surgical treatments, which will quickly relieve any pain and unsightly concerns caused by problematic veins.

One of the main risk factors for varicose veins is reported to be either prolonged sitting or standing. Other factors include; pregnancy, being overweight, old age and if your parents had them. Symptoms include aching, heavy and uncomfortable legs, swollen feet and ankles, muscle cramping, dry skin and colour changes in the lower leg.

The veins that turn varicose aren’t actually necessary to your body’s circulatory system, which is why it is possible to treat them without harming your body.

At The Cooden Medical Group our aim is to permanently remove the underlying cause as well as the visible symptoms offering a reduction in the possibility of a recurrence of the same problem in the long term.
