Varicocele Embolisation
A varicocele is the term given to an enlarged vein or a network of tangled blood vessels that can appear in the scrotum, causing pain, swelling or atrophy (shrinkage) of the testicles and is also a leading cause of male infertility.
Asymptomatic varicocele is a common condition that does not necessarily cause pain or infertility. Treatment is only really needed if the varicocele causes pain, atrophy or lead to infertility.
Non-Surgical Treatment
At The Cooden Medical Group we carry out varicocele embolisation, a non-surgical treatment option that can safely relieve pain, swelling and may improve sperm quality as treatment can improve semen analysis, increasing chances of fertility.
The procedure uses imaging guidance and a catheter to place a tiny coil and/or embolic fluid in a blood vessel to divert blood flow away from a varicocele. It’s less invasive than conventional surgery, can safely relieve pain and swelling, and may improve sperm quality.
If the procedure is performed under sedation, the intravenous (IV) sedative will make you feel relaxed and sleepy. During varicocele embolization, tiny nick is made in the leg to insert a catheter, which is then guided up to the abdomen and into the varicocele vein. After the procedure, the catheter is removed and no stitches are needed.
You will be instructed to return home and rest quietly on the day of the procedure and if you feel ready, you may resume normal activity the next day.
No, as we perform this procedure using local anaesthesia and sedation.
The length of the procedure takes approximately 45 – 60 minutes. Typically, patients are observed for a few hours and go home the same day.
Risks are uncommon and are limited to bruising at the catheter site, nausea or mild backache. Infection, hydrocele or loss of a testicle has never been reported after coil embolisation.
Initial Consultation For Varicocele Embolisation
All our vein treatments require an initial, investigative consultation. We will perform a range of comprehensive diagnostic tests and scans, based on a foundation of Duplex Ultrasound Scanning, in preparation of any treatment plan. Here we will review your symptoms and exclude the likelihood of a deep vein thrombosis. Further to this, we can then create a unique treatment plan for you and accurately outline the type and cost of your procedure.
