Keloid scars are the highly visible, exaggerated scars that some people are predisposed to. They can be common result of acne and can also develop after surgery, burns, chickenpox, piercings, a major skin trauma or appear even if there’s no obvious damage to the skin at all.
These bumps are shiny and hairless, feel hard and rubbery and commonly occur on the upper chest and shoulders or in people with darker skin, in the beard area and on the scalp. Many sufferers find the condition very distressing, affecting their confidence in a deep way.
Although scientists are still not quite sure what causes keloid scarring, they can be hereditary and are most likely to develop in people under 30. Although they are not dangerous, they can be itchy and tender or even painful to touch.
