Eczema (Atopic Dermatitis)

  • eczema treatments aim to ease the symptoms of the condition
  • eczema (atopic dermatitis) can be treated at The Cooden Medical Clinic

Eczema is a chronic skin disorder that can affect anyone of any age, ethnicity or gender. The condition appears as a dry skin rash, often with a red and scaly appearance, anywhere on the body or face. Eczema is a common complaint, with an estimated 1 in 9 of us having had an outbreak at some point in our lives.

The term ‘eczema’ broadly applies to a range of persistent skin conditions also known as ‘atopic dermatitis’ which causes a variety of symptoms from dryness, redness, swelling, itching, crusting, oozing or bleeding. These conditions can lead to scarring and discolouration of the skin as a result of persistent scratching or rubbing.

When it comes to remedying eczema, it is important to recognise the condition early so you can start treatment.

more details
  • What is causing my eczema?

Although there’s no single known cause for eczema, people who have it tend to inherit a tendency to develop it from their parents as they do asthma and hay fever as well. Eczema isn’t infectious, so you can’t catch it from anyone else.

What will happen after treatment with Dermalux LED Phototherapy?

After your first treatment there will be some visible changes in the/ skin, but most changes occur naturally over a few weeks as the light we use stimulates the natural processes even after the treatment has stopped. LED is a progressive rather than an aggressive approach and builds resistance over time.

Is Dermalux LED Phototherapy treatment safe?

Yes. This treatment is safe for all skin types and also effective in the treatment of a wide range of skin conditions.

Is the sun good for eczema?

Many people find that their eczema improves when they’ve been out in the sun. However don’t spend too long in the sun and avoid sunburn as this can lead to other problems. Remember to protect your skin by using a broad spectrum SPF30 sunscreen.

Can I go swimming with eczema?

Yes however if you are in a treated pool you might need to take some precautions as chlorine may irritate your skin and make your eczema worse. If this happens it best avoid chlorinated pools altogether.
