  • Acne scarring can be treated for a smoother complexion
  • treatment for facial acne scars can include dermal fillers or chemical peels
  • there are various kinds of acne scars: ice pick scars, rolling scars and boxcar scars
  • acne scar treatment can help restore the appearance of the skin and reduce inflammation

Acne scarring is a common complication of acne, a skin condition characterised by red pimples or boils on the skin, which affects anywhere on the body, but mainly the face, chest and shoulders. Acne scarring is disfiguring and it can be emotionally painful. Any type of acne spot can result in scar tissue forming, however it is most prevalent after nodules and cysts burst and damage nearby skin.

Acne scarring can also occur if you have a tendency to pick or squeeze your spots, which also exasperates the problem, so the best advice is to always to leave them alone. There are three main types of acne scars:

Ice pick scars: These small marks in the skin are so called as the resemble marks made by a small, sharp object.

Rolling scars: These marks produce an uneven ‘rolling’ appearance caused by bands of scar tissue that form under the skin.

Boxcar scars: These are the typical ‘crater’ marks that are formed of round or oval depressions.

If you notice that acne is leaving scars on your skin, we recommend you take positive action; there are many innovative new ways to deal with acne, heal your scars and prevent new ones from forming.

As one treatment will not work for everyone, we have a wide range of options for acne scars, which we use either alone or in combination with other treatments for the best results.

Recommended treatments for Acne Scarring:

Here at the Cooden Medical Group we have a number of options to help treat and resole mild, moderate and severe acne. The following treatments can work in conjunction with any medication your doctor has prescribed you.

Chemical Peels

Chemical Peels remove a layer of damaged skin from the face by a chemical reaction to reveal a newer, healthier layer underneath. This causes the outer layers to peel away and then, when the skin begins to heal, the increased cell growth produces healthier skin layers, resulting in a more even appearance. We recommend:

  • Mandelic Acid Peel
  • Pyruvic Peel
  • Salicylic Acid Peel
  • Obagi Radiance® Peel
  • Obagi Blue Peel®
  • TCA Peel
  • Retinol

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers can be used to plump up atrophic (indented) scars, offering a smoother skin texture. Although the results can be seen immediately, they are temporary and need to be repeated every 6 months.

  • What is acne scarring?

A scar is basically fibrous tissue that replaces normal tissue destroyed by injury or disease. Scars develop as a result of the body’s attempt to repair surrounding tissue that has been injured where the healing process was unable to completely replace the lost or damaged tissue. Acne scarring is the result of damage in excess of what the body can normally heal, resulting in depressed or raised, hard, thickened areas.

How is inflammation involved in acne scarring?

When a scar forms as a result of acne, it’s due to inflammation associated with the acne itself. As the inflammation goes deeper into the skin’s surface, more tissue damage occurs resulting in greater scarring.

What is best treatment with the least amount of downtime for pitted acne scars?

A treatment that offers the least amount of downtime would be the use of dermal fillers, however we would review your skin at your first consultation and provide you with the best option then.

Are topical treatments effective for getting rid of acne scars?

Topical medication (lotions and creams) are a non-invasive option for treating acne scars. We find that they are more effective when used in combination with other treatments. We would discuss your options, match up the treatments to suit your skin and the type of acne you have.

Will picking my skin produce scarring?

If you squeeze, pinch, or pick your blemishes you risk developing scars. Acne lesions can form in areas where pressure is frequently applied to the skin so frequent rubbing and touching of skin lesions should be avoided.
