Mr Pieter Gouws

Consultant Ophthalmologist – MBChBFRCOphth, DipDerm

Pieter is a consultant ophthalmologist working at the Sussex Premier Health in East Sussex.

He trained in South Africa and worked as a general practitioner before moving to the UK in 1996 to pursue a career in ophthalmology. He completed two fellowships specialising in Glaucoma (Toronto, Canada – 2004-2005) and Medical Retina (Bristol, England – 2003-2004). Mr Gouws is a very experienced general ophthalmic surgeon in glaucoma, anterior segment, oculoplastic, strabismic and all medical retinal procedures.

As part of standard ophthalmic care over the last 18 years as a consultant, any skin lesions on the skin around the eyes are routinely removed with/without being sent for histology. He is highly experienced in performing lid surgery and routinely performs surgery for dermatochalasis (overhanging skin of the upper lids) as well as lid malposition (ectropion or entropion). Pieter started seeing patients at the Cooden clinic in April 2022 and the clinic quickly expanded from only ophthalmology cases into a minor lumps and bumps clinic with patients presenting with various skin lesions all over their bodies they want removed. This was a natural extension of the existing practice of removing similar lesions from the face.

Pieter has multiple qualifications in treating dermatological conditions and is also highly trained and experienced in the use of the K laser for treating skin disease as well as musculoskeletal disorders. Pieter helped to establish the charity, Andean Medical Mission in 2011 aimed at treating and preventing blindness in the Bolivian Amazon and goes on yearly trips to work in this highly impoverished community. He performed the 1000th operation on his trip in 2019 and remains highly active as the medical director of the charity. Pieter offers a wide range of treatments many of which are performed with the revolutionary K-Laser Blue. Treatments:
  • Removal skin lesions either by conventional surgery or K-Laser (warts, papillomas, moles etc.)
  • Correction of lid deformities (Ectropion or entropion)
