Pieter is an independent consultant ophthalmologist working at the Spire Sussex Hospital in East Sussex. He holds two fellowships specialising in Glaucoma (Toronto, Canada – 2004-2005) and Medical Retina (Bristol, England – 2003-2004).
Mr Gouws is a very experienced general ophthalmic surgeon in glaucoma, anterior segment, oculoplastic, strabismic and all medical retinal procedures. He is an accomplished phaco surgeon experienced in high-volume day case cataract surgery (personally performed over 20 000 procedures) as well as complex cataract extractions, He set up and ran the diabetic screening in East Sussex before leaving the NHS (screening 25 000 patients per year).
He is published extensively in peer-reviewed journals and present regularly at national and international events and has a keen interest in teaching, with qualifications in career counselling and medical education. His current interests lie in cataract surgery combined with minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). He has the largest UK cohort of patients treated with endoscopic laser for treating glaucoma combined with cataract extraction (Phaco ECP) and the best regional results with Xen stent implantation.
He is now also the first ophthalmologist in his region to offer IPL treatment for dry eye and is conducting a trial comparing different devices.
Pieter helped to establish the charity, Andean Medical Mission (http://www.andeanmedicalmission.co.uk/) in 2011 aimed at treating and preventing blindness in the Bolivian Amazon and goes on yearly trips to work in this highly impoverished community. The charity is currently involved in distributing Covid vaccines on the Brazilian border.
