Skin lesions are the harmless but irritating lumps and bumps, found on or just below the skin on your body or face. They can be irritating, cause distress and affect your confidence. Our Cooden Skin clinic offers the removal and treatment of many skin lesions and imperfections.

These are the small, brown or black marks on your skin that you either born or develop when you're a child or in your early adult life. Most moles are harmless and can actually be beauty enhancing – known as beauty spots, however some may be large and in awkward places, such as where you shave or on your nose, under bra straps etc. This can be a reason to want them removed.

Skin Tags

These are small, rough lumps that can be found anywhere on your body and face. They are highly contagious and unsightly and are caused by infection with the human papilloma virus (HPV). Epidermoid Cysts

Are closed sac-like or capsule structures that may be filled with semisolid material, gaseous material, or liquid and can also be made up of a protein called keratin and fat. They usually appear on the face, neck, or upper body, especially the chest and shoulders. They erupt for many reasons, most often because of acne or mild skin injuries. (When they are formed because of swelling around hair follicles, they are called pilar cysts).

These are benign tumours made up of fatty tissue. They usually appear as a soft or firm nodule, size with a smooth normal surface and skin-coloured appearance. They are soft to the touch, usually movable, and are generally painless. Many lipoma's are small (under 1cm diameter) but can enlarge to sizes greater than 6cms.

  • Can you remove skin tags on the eyelids?

Yes. Skin tags, including those from near your eyes, can be removed or frozen off with liquid nitrogen. If you are having this treatment, we do not recommend you drive yourself home, so bring a friend to the clinic with you. We can explain this further at your consultation.

What happens to the area after the skin legion is removed?

Removal of a skin lesion leaves a hole in the skin which, depending on the size of the legion, can be repaired with tiny stitches, some of which are disposal, some of which will be taken out a week later. Most skin lesions can be removed and repaired in this simple way.

Can you remove a new lump I have found on my skin?

Most skin lesions, for example; moles, cysts, warts or skin tags, are not harmful. However, if you have a new mole or lump, or if an existing one has changed, we recommend you see your GP immediately to have it checked out.

Do I need to take any time off work?

This all depends on your unique situation. If you have a local anaesthetic then you can drive yourself to and from hospital on the day of your operation. However, depending on the type of work you do it may be a good idea to book the rest of the day off.

What are the problems associated with skin legion removal?

Very little. Bleeding is uncommon however should it occur it can usually be stopped by applying pressure over the area for at least 10 minutes with a rolled up handkerchief or swab. Infection is also uncommon but if this is possibility you will be given an antibiotic ointment or tablets.
